Characterization of Epoxy-Nanoparticle Composites in Microwave and Millimeter-Wave Regimes

Material with nanoscale structure often has unique optical, electrical, and mechanical properties, when comparing to its macroscale structure. Characterizing the complex permeability and permittivity provide useful information to understand microwave-material interaction. In this work, the silver nanoparticles are mixed with epoxy and then filled in the waveguide. Transmission and reflection method is used to obtain the materials’ electromagnetic properties in X-and and W-band regions. By comparing the measured results with the full-wave simulation and the analytical equations, we can determine the complex permeability and permittivity. The results agree well with the effective medium theory in both X-band and W-band.
