Nonpolar Gas Effect on Lipid Bilayer Mechanical Properties

Abstract
Small non-polar molecules such as nitrogen, oxygen and noble gases, can cause serious biological effects such as anesthesia and nitrogen narcosis under high pressure conditions. However, the biological mechanism remains unclear. We perform molecular dynamic simulation to investigate how these gas molecules dissolve and affect the mechanical properties of lipid membrane. We find significant gas solvation in the lipid bilayer, and the bilayer bending modulus increases as the gas molecular concentration in the membrane increases. The lateral pressure of the bilayer also increases, suggesting a possible mechanism that affects the function of membrane proteins.
