Introduction to Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning

傳統的教導式教學具有注重教材的程序性的優點,但教法上學生缺乏主動學習。新的探索式教學,強調由學生主動探索知識;但是有著缺乏先被知識無所適從、易導致挫折的缺點。過程導向的探索式教學(Process oriented Guided Inquiry Learning, POGIL)是一種採用多重階段的探索式教學,教師將到達最終目標的過程細分成多個階段,由教師導引學生逐一完成的任務。POGIL鼓勵學生經由團隊學習的方式,主動學習知識與能力;意義上就是翻轉教育。但不像坊間常用「翻轉教育」只是由學生看影片而已,POGIL更強調課堂上教師的導引,與學生間的團隊學習。此外,POGIL講究學習「過程能力」,這是就業力的核心。因此POGIL教學法也是一種提升就業力的優質教學法。本文介紹POGIL的基本原理,並提出一些試用的案例。

The conventional way of teaching focus on the sequential presentation of the contents of knowledge, which is constructed by the teachers or textbook writers. Lectures can be delivered with ease and fast pace. However, the students rely on the teachers and lack of active learning. The inquiry-based learning emphasizes that students actively explore knowledge and construct knowledge from the inquiry activities. The setbacks is that students lack of pre-requisite knowledge and often are confused in the inquiry phase. Process oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) is a multi-stage inquiry-based teaching in which teachers subdivide the process of reaching the ultimate goal into multiple stages, with teachers directing students to accomplish tasks one by one. POGIL encourages students to take the initiative to learn the content of knowledge and process skills through team learning. Unlike the common use of "flip classroom", which is just for students to watch videos, POGIL emphasizes the guidance of teachers in the classroom and the team learning among students. In addition, POGIL pays attention to the learning process skills, which is the core of the employability. So POGIL pedagogy is also a quality pedagogy that enhances employability. This article describes the basic principles of POGIL, and presents some trial cases.
